Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Disability

Catalog description

This course is a broad survey of health conditions, including chronic illness and mental, physical, and emotional disorders and the resulting psychosocial and psychological impact on the individual. Students will be exposed to and critique the sociocultural impact of systemic inequities in healthcare access, economic opportunities, and social domains as it relates to disability and health. Students will apply disability affirmative principles, practices, and models for conceptualizing clients. For each category of disability conditions reviewed, students will gain an understanding of diagnostic criteria, appropriate treatments and interventions, supports, assistive technology, and appropriate referrals. Students will apply content on health conditions and cultural context to case studies and reflective assignments to demonstrate their mastery of the material.
