This course introduces fundamental concepts and issues in international economic policies, focusing on the forces that drive global trade and finance. On the trade side, we will examine why nations trade and the factors shaping global trade patterns. Issues discussed will include gains from trade and their distribution, as well as the policies designed to alter trade patterns. We will analyze tariffs and non-tariff barriers used to protect domestic industries, as well as U.S. trade policies. In international finance, we will cover the balance of payments, factors determining exchange rates, and the impact of government intervention on currency markets. A distinctive feature of this course will be its emphasis on connecting theory with practice. By using and analyzing current and historical datasets, we will evaluate policies and confront theoretical models with real-world evidence to deepen our understanding of international economic dynamics.
