Catalog description

This course provides a review of professional skills and counseling for practicing speech language pathologists. In this course, students will review professional ethics and regulations at the state and national level. Students will discuss professional practice across a variety of settings, and discusses cultural considerations for studying, assessing, treating, and counseling those clients and their families/caregivers with communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. This course provides an overview and introduction to various approaches to counseling including basic concepts of the therapeutic process, the client/clinician relationship and specific techniques and procedures relevant to speech-language pathologists. Additionally, the course includes topics related to cultural and linguistic diversity, including how speech-language pathologists can consider social determinants of health through an intersectional lens to best meet the needs of the clients.
