GEN 456
Applied Strength of Materials
Pennsylvania College of Technology · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Exploration of the relationships between material properties, stress, strain, and structural behavior through both analytical and experimental methods. Topics include the mechanics of axially loaded members, beams, and columns to understand deformation and failure under service conditions. Utilizing tensile, impact, and hardness testing, as well as experiments in beam bending, deflection, and section properties, data analyses are conducted to determine mechanical properties, compare results with theoretical predictions, and apply findings to material selection decisions. Emphasis is placed on understanding how materials and geometry jointly influence strength, stiffness, and safety in design. Spring Only.
