Emergency and critical care medicine combines the rapid evaluation and stabilization of acutely ill patients in an emergency setting and the advanced management of critically ill patients requiring intensive monitoring and specialized treatments in an intensive care unit (ICU). This field demands a comprehensive understanding of medical and surgical conditions, coupled with expertise in advanced patient monitoring techniques and cutting-edge therapeutic interventions including mechanical ventilation, interventional radiology, and extracorporeal therapies. In this course, students will gain an additional understanding of the practice of emergency and critical care medicine through a combination of lectures and active learning activities with case discussions. The goal of this course is to help you become more comfortable with the diagnosis, management, and advanced therapeutic options available for the treatment of emergent and critically ill patients. The course is suitable for students that might be interested in emergency and critical care specialization as well as for future general practice or emergency only veterinarians that wish to provide a high level of emergent and intensive care (and understand when to refer) to the sickest of small animal patients.
