Disseminating Public Sociology I

This course is specifically designed for graduate student participation and experience in the editorial production of Contexts, the public-facing magazine of the American Sociological Association, published quarterly. In this course, students will study selected written works of American sociology (as broadly defined) intended for a general audience of readers, including bestselling works of nonfiction, newspaper op-eds, and magazine articles. Students will also evaluate current academic journal articles to select research findings to be promoted in upcoming issues of Contexts magazine. Students will also proofread accepted submissions to Contexts prior to publication for syntax, grammar, and style, as part of the regular operations of the journal. Finally, students will practice writing in various genres of public sociology and will have the opportunity to voluntarily submit research briefs for possible publication and author attribution in Contexts. This course will serve as the first half of a year-long sequence designed to provide a unique,high-quality training experience for graduate students, especially those preparing for academic, research, and editorial careers in the social sciences. Advanced undergraduates can request permission for enrollment.
