This foundational course introduces advanced nursing practice learners to the key principles of healthcare quality improvement and patient safety, including systems thinking, the theory of knowledge, understanding measurement and variation, and understanding the psychology of change. Utilizing complexity theories, students critically assess healthcare practices, identifying factors that contribute to medical errors and affect patient safety. The course leverages insights from the science of safety, guiding students to formulate proactive strategies for the safe redesign of healthcare systems. Students reflect on the importance of inter-professional collaboration and fostering a “just” culture committed to fairness, openness, and psychological safety, all vital for maintaining high reliability and ensuring safe, high-quality care delivery.
