Adv Physical Assessment Across the Lifespan & Clinical Decision Making for Adv Nursing Practice
University of Pennsylvania · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course prepares advanced practice nurses with the advanced clinical assessment skills essential for safe and effective patient care. This core requirement taken prior to entering clinical practice lays the groundwork for competent, confident provider-patient interactions in advanced nursing roles. Through a combination of didactic instruction and hands-on laboratory experiences, students engage in real-time practice with peers, standardized models, and consenting patients. The course emphasizes comprehensive data collection, a decision-making framework for the advanced practice role, and hypothesis generating in simulated clinical environments. Additionally, students will integrate knowledge of social determinants of health into routine and crisis/emergency care in advanced practice nursing. By the end of the course, students will be able to perform thorough, systematic health assessments and synthesize clinical findings to inform diagnostic and treatment planning. These skills will serve as the foundation for competency achievement in clinical management.
