Catalog description

This first clinical practicum course is designed to develop clinical reasoning and judgment through synthesis of assessment findings, diagnostic reasoning, and evidence-based care coordination for the delivery of primary care to middle-aged and older adults. Through 250 hours of supervised clinical practice and additional structured seminar sessions, students practice comprehensive assessments, differential diagnoses, and evidence-based care management of acute and chronic conditions. The course emphasizes culturally responsive care, ethical decision-making, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Seminar components provide a critical space for students to synthesize clinical experiences, engage in peer-led case discussions, and refine skills in clinical reasoning, documentation, and oral presentation. Students are expected to apply current clinical guidelines, integrate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and reflect on their evolving role as nurse practitioners. By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate these skills aimed at high quality, safe, effective, and equitable advanced practitioner registered nursing care along with leadership and advocacy for patients, families and healthcare team within complex healthcare systems.
