Ways of Knowing for Nursing Practice: Foundations of Professional Practice

This course introduces the professional role of the nurse with an emphasis on accountability, communication, advocacy, and collaboration. Students develop a deeper understanding of the nurse’s responsibility in health promotion, illness prevention, and holistic, patient-centered care. Students are introduced to nursing's historical evolution and its distinct and shared perspectives with other disciplines. Emphasis is placed on the role of personal values in clinical decision-making and the integration of diverse ways of knowing to enhance clinical judgment. Students will reflect on the human experience, connecting storytelling to communication strategies for health promotion to develop skills in narrative writing for personal and professional growth. This course explores a nurse’s role in assessing quality and safety measures and promoting a culture of safety.
