Ethnographic and Anthropological Approaches

This course focuses on theories and models of inquiry in the discipline of ethnomusicology (the anthropology of music). Focusing on recent scholarship, it addresses themes and debates of current importance as well as those that stretch across the discipline’s history. Topics commonly covered include: identity, power, cultural context and meaning, labor, religion, gender and sexuality, technology, memory and trauma, intellectual property, and globalization; subfields such as applied ethnomusicology, ecomusicology, and sound studies; and the ethics and politics of fieldwork.
