Catalog description

This course introduces students to critical themes in the field of ethnomusicology (the anthropology of music). Through numerous case studies, in-depth reading of scholarship, and close listening to sound and music, we will learn what kinds of questions ethnomusicologists ask and how they endeavor to answer them. Along the way, the course provides students with a critical toolkit for exploring the profound relations between music, society, and culture.
