Catalog description

How do cultural norms, languages, and values shape musical traditions? How have musical traditions influenced one another across the globe? This course encourages students to listen expansively and creatively to the world around them—and to learn about how cultures have listened to one another. Through an exploration of a variety of musical and sonic cultures, students will learn to listen across difference while investigating concepts inherent to certain musical traditions. Along the way, we will theorize music’s relation to topics that mediate our world, such as identity, belonging, knowledge, tradition, and power.
