Catalog description

Music 0181: On Belonging: Music, Displacement, and Well-Being In this seminar, students reflect on the strategies they might harness to create a sense of wellbeing and belonging as they arrive on campus, and travel home or to friends and family through the academic year. We begin by reflecting on ideas about belonging, awe/wonder, and the practice of sound walking as a way of coming to know the city, campus, and community. We then focus on interdisciplinary research on music, emotions, and the brain, with a project on personal music listening for emotional regulation, and playlist curation. Finally, we reflect on living communities producing and consuming music, with either a community engagement (ABCS) project in Philly schools, or learning from performers, producers, and music curators in Philadelphia or South Africa. This course is open to everyone in all four undergraduate schools.
