MUSA 8010
MUSA/Smart Cities Practicum
University of Pennsylvania · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Students will complete a semester-long applied spatial data science project. There are two sections of this class - one for client-based projects and one for independent or small team studies. In Section 401, small teams of students work under faculty direction with a government or NGO client on professional data science projects. In Section 402, students work an independent study. Students may select a project from a list of pre-defined projects from either section or, less commonly, identify their own independent research project. In the case of an independent project, the student must consult with the instructor of this practicum section before the start of the semester to have the project approved and scoped out in advance. Students may work in small teams or independently. Throughout the semester, students will be mentored by the instructor of the course on completing the deliverables by the end of the semester. Projects must be a practical application of geospatial, statistical, or machine learning methods or tools.
