Grantsmanship for Career Development Awards

Open to nondegree: No Prerequisite: Students are required to be writing a career development award during the term in which they enroll in the course. If you are interested in taking the course, please contact Dr. Rachel Locke to confirm you meet the requirements before requesting permission to register. Objectives: (1) Write a first draft of the Candidate Section of the K award (and more if your Specific Aims are clear and don’t change considerably during the course). (2) Understand and apply grant writing best practices to basic science and translational research grants beyond NIH. (3) Develop professional networks with other students. Topics covered: (1) How to Apply to NIH: NIH lingo; Reading NOFOs; Finding all the instructions; Grant review and scoring; Biosketch. (2) Writing Career Development Awards (K): The concept behind these awards; How to write the 3 parts of the Candidate Section; Identifying your career niche, career goals, and the skills you need to succeed in your niche; Writing the training plan: activities will you do to gain the skills you need, who will help you get those skills (identifying mentors and advisory committee members); Letters of Reference. (3) The Research Project: Grants solve problems that people in your field care about; What is your grant story?; Creating a graphical representation of your Specific Aims; Developing clarity about data output, interpretation, value, potential and where on the application you use each concept; Linking your preliminary data to the Specific Aims; Writing hypotheses: Presenting preliminary data and figures in grants; Grant planning using the statement of work; Your grant story’s happy ending: framing your application.
