Discovery Procedure
University of Pennsylvania · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
The goal of generative grammar is to provide a discovery procedure for language, a practical and mechanical method for constructing the grammar given a corpus of utterances. In this class, we pursue a constructive program with plausible algorithms for linguistic structures from phoneme onward. Such an effort is only possible by integrating insights from linguistics, child development, cognitive science and machine learning that have developed since the original conception of discovery procedure in the late 1940s.
