LLMs for UX Prototyping. Using Natural Language AI to Design and Prototype with Code.
University of Pennsylvania · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Background Since the emergence of Large Language Models and Multimodal Models it has become increasingly more feasible to write fully operating programs without ever touching a line of formal code. In contrast to AI Copilots which prioritize the software engineering environment, experiments such as, OpenAI’s CodeX, Draw-A-UI, and Spatial Pixel’s Natural Language IDE prioritize a design first environment for programming. Why a design first approach to programming? One, it allows those without a technical background to access the power of programming. Two, it allows for rapid prototyping of the design and technical functionality simultaneously. Three, it allows you to focus on the higher level intent of your design without getting stuck in the weeds of coding syntax. Course Structure This course will explore, experiment and research the capabilities of natural language programming for prototyping. It will be a project oriented course with technical exercises on how to string together AI capabilities. We will learn to build functional prototypes with AI. Who is this class for? Designers, engineers, and business folks who want to bring their ideas to life through prototyping with AI. No prior programming knowledge is needed though it is incredibly helpful. The course will allow for two tracks for those with a more technical programming background and those just starting out. Students at varying technical levels will work together on prototypes.
