French 0300 simulates a semester of life in Paris. Homework assignments and in-class activities require you to perform authentic tasks such as renting an apartment, ordering at a restaurant, planning weekend activities, and exploring a specific Parisian neighborhood. Through role-play activities, problem-solving tasks, discussions, debates, writing assignments, and video recordings, you and your classmates will share your experiences and discoveries. This collaborative and cumulative approach will allow us to deepen our collective knowledge of the City of Light and French culture. Along the way, we confront universal issues such as stereotypes, immigration, and cultural connotations by adopting a posture of respectful inquisitiveness. Conducted entirely in French (like other French courses at Penn), French 0300 helps you attain a level of proficiency that should allow you to function comfortably in a French-speaking environment. In this first half of a two-semester intermediate sequence, we build on your existing skills, increase your confidence and ability to read, write, speak, and understand French, and introduce you to more refined lexical items, more complex grammatical structures, and more challenging cultural material. As you continue to learn how to learn French, you will develop the practice of studying and reviewing grammatical structures on your own.
