Catalog description

This course expands upon the knowledge and experience gained in Photography 1. With an emphasis on image output, both analog and digital, we will explore intermediate technical, theoretical, and conceptual photographic possibilities. Students will be expected to expand their artistic process while refining a critical approach to researched subject matter. Four distinct projects will guide the class, designed to expose students to the broad possibilities of the medium and to support the development of an ambitious research-based final project that is culturally, theoretically, and historically informed. Together, we will examine key issues surrounding the digital image in contemporary society through lectures, readings, group discussions, and critiques. Throughout the semester, students will advance their knowledge of image control, manipulation, and color management, while gaining proficiency with camera technology, lighting strategies, and professional printing practices. Most importantly, there will be an emphasis on self-guided making/exploration, critical engagement with contemporary visual culture, and the role of photography in the creation of art. Individual projects will explore themes such as archive, authorship, expanded documentary, appropriation, expanded documentary, and constructed imagery.
