Qualitative Digital Methods in Educational Research

As digital technologies infuse and shape people’s everyday worlds, educational researchers are faced with emerging and dynamic questions about the role of digital tools and spaces in their methodological practices. This doctoral seminar (also appropriate for advanced master’s students) is a hands-on, workshop-style qualitative methods course designed to help students explore these questions in relation to their research interests. We will engage with a range of methodological approaches for understanding learning with/through/about digital technologies, with students experimenting with different tools for data collection, analysis, dissemination, and workflow in the context of a semester-long inquiry into a topic of their choosing. Whether students are considering studying an online community, using video in classroom research, analyzing data using QDA software, or conducting Zoom interviews, all are welcome - no prior experience with digital methods necessary.
