Ethnography for Language, Globalization, and Intercultural Studies

Catalog description

This course functions as a platform for collaborative data-analysis and “workshopping” activities based on each student’s uploaded samples of data. The goal is to develop a focused and cumulative discussion that will enable students to link their own ethnographic observations to issues of continuing concern in the field of Language, Globalization, and Intercultural Studies (LGIS), as exemplified in suggested readings. Fluency in the theoretical and methodological vocabulary of LGIS will enable participants to see how key concepts—from ‘face’ to conversational inference to codeswitching to communicative repertoires and beyond—are exemplified in their own and each other’s material. The course will enable students in the LGIS MS.Ed. Program to organize and begin to interpret data from their internship site in preparation for their culminating Capstone project.
