Praxis/Developmental Research Methods

This course is designed for ISHD master’s students interested in conducting research and/or participating in an applied or research-based internship setting. The main goals of this course are to: (1) develop students’ capacity to connect human developmental theories and related coursework to research and practice, (2) to explore the practical applications of research and theory in human development and (3) to provide an introduction to the essential components of designing, conducting and evaluating research in developmental psychology. The course will cover topics related to developmentally appropriate practice, research methodology and translating research into practice using lecture, discussion, in-class activities, and outside reading and writing assignments. The objectives of this course are to help students develop the skills necessary to: • Critically evaluate research and the conclusions that can be drawn from research (i.e., to promote the skills necessary to be a good consumer of research) • Conduct quality research in developmental psychology • Make connections between theory, research, course material and real life application
