Catalog description

What is research? What is knowledge? And how do practitioners in different fields systematically investigate and study reality? This course explores the intersection of creative practice and research as a method for creating meaningful, conceptually grounded art and design. Students will investigate how diverse forms of inquiry—such as data collection, scientific experimentation, fieldwork, interviews, cultural research—can serve as catalysts for artistic production. Emphasis will be placed on developing strategies for transforming information, data, and lived experience into visual and multimedia works. Through readings, discussions, case studies of contemporary artists and designers, students will critically examine the ethics, aesthetics, and politics of working with research in the arts. The course encourages experimentation across media while fostering rigorous methodologies, clear documentation practices, reflective writing, and hands-on projects. By the end of the semester, students will produce a research-driven project that demonstrates both their ability to engage deeply with a chosen subject and to translate complex ideas into compelling artistic forms.
