DSGN 5018
Graphic Design I: Creative Technologies
University of Pennsylvania · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The course introduces students to graphic design as a method of communication in which the interaction of formal elements—color, composition, typography, images—creates complex messages. During the semester, students develop coherent yet open-ended visual systems and apply them in a variety of contexts including posters, publications and architectural settings. Studio projects focus on both conceptual and formal aspects of visual communication such as creating visual metaphors and structuring information. Lectures and critiques offer theoretical grounding, while hands-on workshops present practical skills and techniques, opening the space for experimentation.
