The City at Night

This course is an urban planner’s guide to the emerging field of Nighttime Cities. We will survey a cross-section of issues and concepts related to urban life at night and discuss relevant practices in urban planning and policy. The course will give special focus to issues of culture, community, "night work," and entertainment-related commerce, but it will also cover issues in transportation, governance, design, regulation, health, and economic development. Students will learn through field study, guest lectures, film and music, data analysis, and readings. The course will allow for individualized study of nighttime places, communities, and systems in Philadelphia. Introductory GIS knowledge is required. Be prepared to stay up late!
