A longform piece of research articulating an original argument, with clear, thoughtful methodology, engaging deeply with relevant primary and secondary sources. The usual format consists of an introduction, 3 or 4 chapters, and a conclusion, with bibliography and footnotes. A dissertation thesis is similar to, and may form the basis of, a scholarly or critical book.
