Catalog description

This seminar provides a rigorous foundation in the methodologies used to analyze, document, and theorize media in a global context. Students will be exposed to major theories, movements, and critical concepts used to analyze and understand media. Approaches include archival and historical methods, discourse analysis, industry analysis, ethnography, critical infrastructure studies, approaches to technology and media audiences, the impact of media law and policy, ethical inquiry, discourse analysis, the evolution of cultural studies, political economy, and algorithmic/computational approaches, among others. Students will be required to do regular writing assignments, leading to a research paper.
