Catalog description

This seminar introduces first year PhD students in Architecture to the larger academic context of doctoral programs. Students are introduced to questions of academic scholarship and freedom, types of research trajectories and technologies, the art of publication, and career trajectories made possible by the PhD process. Course methods include required attendance at weekly seminars offered by returning students, graduate group faculty, graduates of the program, and invited guests. Students are tasked with preparing weekly readings in order to lead the question and discussion session that follows each seminar presentation. In maintaining the tradition of the program’s PhD Talks, while some of the seminar sessions are open to the larger doctoral community that includes its students and faculty, others are dedicated exclusively to registered students. An important goal of the seminar is to introduce all students to each other and to create a vertical community of scholars across both sub-areas of history/theory and technology.
