University of Pennsylvania · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The second course in the project management sequence positions the designer as a critical team member on the project site. Utilizing an understanding of contractual relationships between the architect and owner, and the owner and general contractor, the course introduces concepts of building permitting, project scheduling, basic construction estimation based on various construction systems, subcontractor responsibilities, and project payments based on construction funding. Virtual design and delivery tools will be utilized, and candidates will learn to track construction progress utilizing building and financial models, understanding the relationship between the two. Aspects of the project delivery cycle will be explored in depth, including concepts of lean construction, design-build, and new construction technologies including offsite assembly and modular systems. A global view of construction projects and construction management roles will be established.
