The Architecture of Re-imagination: The History and Theory of Reuse

Catalog description

This class will place the acts of renovating, restoring, rehabilitating, and re-imagining exiting structures in a historical and theoretical context. Proceeding through a series of case studies in which students will be asked to research, document, analyze, and present notable instances of the re-imagination of existing buildings and other structures, the class will provide students with the ability to understand the social, economic, and aesthetic issues that determine current modes of renovation. While the class will not provide technical information, it will give students access to the sources and history of the codes, regulations, and methodologies that govern renovation practices.
