Catalog description

This summer design studio is the introductory course to the Property Development and Design (PDD) program. The studio puts forth contemporary ideas about geometric modeling and computation tools used in the service of building design and development, and financial modeling tools used to evaluate development feasibility, assess risk, and understand the economic implications of design decisions. The course posits that material and financial flows must comprehensively interact in a successful real estate development project. The studio will propose cyber-physical architecture and urbanism that empowers human betterment via effective resource utilization. Students will be introduced to advanced visualization and computational modeling techniques, with an emphasis on their interoperability with financial tools used to inform real estate development and investment decisions. Through iterative exercises, students test how geometric and programmatic design decisions directly impact financial performance and project viability. This work is introduced through a series of discrete, yet interrelated, projects that progressively build technical and conceptual complexity. The skills and toolsets deployed in the summer studio form a shared technical and financial foundation that carries through subsequent analytical coursework and design studios across the PDD program.
