History and Theory III

Catalog description

This course builds on the previous History/Theory sequence ( ARCH 5110 and ARCH 5120 ), moving from an emphasis on history to focus on contemporary theories of architecture. The goal is to build literacy in contemporary architectural discourse in correlation with design culture. Students will gain awareness of where the field of contemporary architectural theory currently stands, especially in terms of its societal and scientific relevance. Lectures and discussions will look at the aesthetic, political, and ethical implications of design, and will consider the global context of architecture in light of climate change and emerging building and design technologies. Successful students will gain skills in reading and discussing theoretical texts and will be able to better articulate their own critical thinking and positioning in the field. A passing grade in ARCH 5120 must be earned before enrolling in ARCH 6110 .
