Hip Hop & Social Change: Incarceration, Transformation, and Reconciliation

Over its approximately five decades as a global cultural phenomenon, Hip Hop has been a dialogical space where every aspect of the human experience has been reflected. While considering the history, present, and future of Hip Hop Culture(s), we will give particular attention to its intersection with the carceral system, with inner transformation, and reconciliation between individuals and groups. The course will run concurrently with an educational workshop of the same topic at SCI-Chester through Penn’s Prison Education Program. During the middle of the semester (pending likely approval by the facility’s Superintendent), the students in the class will receive training and then travel to SCI-Chester for two jointly held class sessions with their incarcerated counterparts.
