The addiction medicine elective is a FOUR-week course typically delivered in Phase III that is designed to enhance comfort with addiction medicine and chronic pain management in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The course will focus on principles of addiction medicine and chronic pain management, with an emphasis on opioids. Course material will be presented in the form of workplace teaching in the clinic and readings from textbooks and online learning modules. Central themes of the course are identification of opioid use disorder in the clinical setting, the role of medications for treatment of substance use disorders, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and outpatient therapy for treatment of addiction as well as non-opiate treatment of chronic pain.
