Federal and state EEO laws require the exhaustion of "administrative remedies" before a lawsuit can be filed. This means that the complaining party must file and litigate an administrative complaint with either the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission or the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, before they can file a traditional lawsuit in state or federal court. Litigation before these administrative agencies includes preparing pleadings, investigating claims, counseling clients, gathering discovery, persuasive writing, negotiation and mediation and the questioning of witnesses, among other things. In this course, students will utilize a fictional case file to work through all stages of litigation before these administrative agencies. Instruction will consist of assigned reading, group discussion, research, persuasive writing and simulation exercises. This course satisfies the experiential learning requirement.
