SDM 520
Introduction to Patient Care
Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
SDM 520 is a beginner-level preclinical course designed to introduce students to the foundational skills, behaviors, and expectations of patient care before entering their D2 year and beginning clinical experiences in FQHC settings. Students receive guided, hands-on practice in core procedures—including radiographic techniques, impressions, oral/facial photography, comprehensive examination steps, prophylaxis, local anesthetic administration, and rubber dam placement. The emphasis is on learning in a supportive environment where instructors model techniques, provide step-by-step guidance, and help students build confidence. This course prioritizes safety, infection control, ergonomic positioning, and clear communication rather than diagnostic accuracy or independent competency.
