Radiology in dentistry is omnipresent and plays a vital role in diagnosis, treatment planning, prognosis assessment, and follow-up. This is a didactic lecture course designed to introduce pre-doctoral dental students to radiation and its application in dentistry and health care. This course lays down the foundations of Radiation Physics, Radiation Biology, and Radiation Safety and Protection, and understanding the descriptive terms used in dental radiography. Students will gain knowledge of intraoral and extraoral radiographic techniques commonly used in dental practice. The students will understand digital imaging, PACS software, and teleradiology. This course includes the selection criteria, principles of radiographic interpretation, and radiographic appearances of caries, periodontal diseases, periapical lesions, dental restorations, dental anomalies, etc. The course format will include lectures, quizzes, assignments, and group activities to solve case-based scenarios. This course serves as an introductory course for the Advanced Radiology course, where students will expand their knowledge of radiographic interpretation to 3-dimensional imaging.
