Healthcare is undergoing significant changes, whether in technology, financial models, access concerns, patient satisfaction, or the challenges of training. At the heart of all health care systems is the quality of the provider-patient relationship, based on trust and the patient’s best interests. High-quality treatment relationships are positively associated with better treatment outcomes, patient satisfaction, and provider job satisfaction. This course will teach the skills necessary to develop positive treatment relationships with patients, from the initial greeting to the discussion of the treatment plan. Communication and relationship development skills will be taught via role plays and standardized patients; clinical exam skills will be demonstrated with videos and peer exam sessions; clinical data evaluation will be demonstrated via case studies, and peer dental evaluation activities. Foundational learning concepts include valuing all patients as individuals with inherent dignity, talking to patients at a level that is understandable to them, and engaging patients as the primary agents for achieving their health goals.
