Periodontics and Disease Prevention I

Catalog description
This course will introduce the students to the basics of the periodontal apparatus, including periodontal anatomy and physiology. There will be a strong emphasis on biofilm-induced and gingival diseases and systemic health contributory factors. The pathophysiology of inflammation as it pertains to gingivitis and periodontitis will be firmly taught to facilitate critical thinking in assessing patients’ overall disease progression risk. Clinical examination protocols will be introduced in preparation for creating a diagnosis and prognosis for patients. Students will be introduced to classic and current literature to support content, which will begin to familiarize them with how to read and interpret periodontal literature.
