Scientific Foundations of Medicine

Catalog description

MBS Scientific Foundations of Medicine is a 9.0 credit hour course, taught in the fall semester alongside BIOMED 501 and SDM 500. Students will learn the structure and function of the human body’s most basic constituents and the roles these components play in normal function and pathophysiologic processes. Additionally, students will gain a basic understanding of bacteriology, virology, mycology and 206 | Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences parasitology with an emphasis on microbe-host interactions, infectious disease processes and response of the human body to infection. Major elements of the course include key concepts in biochemistry, embryology, genetics, histology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, nutrition and physiology with a special emphasis on integration and regulation. The course also introduces students to pathology, laboratory, and molecular biology methods as well as clinical case scenarios. Admittance to MBS program or permission of the MBS director is required.
