Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies through Civic Engagement

Students will learn about histories of feminist resistance and how feminist, gender, and sexuality studies are a part of those histories. Topics may include: histories of both dominant and insurgent feminist activism in New York City, Pleasantville, and the surrounding area, the U.S., or North America/Turtle Island; debates among feminist scholars and activists in articulating feminist studies and practice; and the role of so-called “western” feminisms in shaping and being shaped by the concept of the “west". Students will complete at least 20 hours of community service over the course of the semester, in an organization related to the material in the course. Students may NOT take both WS 115C and WS 115 for credit, since these courses are substantially similar.
