Introduction to Special Education

Catalog description
This course provides an overview of the laws, available services, and research-based practices for effectively teaching students with disabilities. The course will explore the historical and philosophical foundations of disability classification and special education, and the impact of special education law and research on the referral, classification, placement and instruction of children and adolescents with disabilities. Through research, simulation, and fieldwork course participants will learn to access disability related information and develop an understanding of the role of the teacher in implementing the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
