Teaching English to Adolescents

This course explores content specific issues, strategies for lesson and unit design, pedagogical methods including digital technologies to facilitate meaningful inquiries for secondary students in English Language Arts (ELA). The course emphasizes creating ELA curriculum that connects adolescents to relevant issues of personal identity, race and culture, as well as social justice and communities. Candidates will learn pedagogies to engage students in critical analysis of a variety of genres such as poetry, short stories, novels, Shakespearean and contemporary plays, multimodal, and various non-fiction texts. In addition, candidates will learn pedagogies to engage students in all aspects of the writing process to compose various texts including narrative, expository, analytical arguments, multimodal, and research projects. Formal and informal assessment of the integrated strands of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, including various ways to support a range of students with diverse literacy needs, will be introduced to support differentiation in the ELA classroom.
