Emergent and Early Literacy Methods for a Diverse Population Birth-Grade 6

Catalog description

In this course, candidates will learn the cognitive, psychological, cultural, and linguistic processes of reading and writing at the emergent through early middle grade levels. Through models and applications using instructional texts, children's literature, art, technology and media applications, candidates will learn methods of curriculum-based and skill-based assessment and instruction consistent with the RTI framework of a tier-based approach to literacy instruction. Content addresses the contextual needs of native English learners, multilingual and ENL learners, and learners from diverse cultural backgrounds as well as a range of cognitive and learning achievement abilities from gifted to challenged competencies (e.g., struggling learners and those with learning disabilities). Candidates will learn evidence-based approaches for classroom and differentiated instruction particularly appropriate for children’s individual needs in Birth-Grade 6. Planning for classroom organization on a group and individual basis will be included. This course requires fieldwork. This course is required of all undergraduate Early/Childhood Education majors.
