Understanding Learning Environments

Catalog description

The course examines motivation, engagement, behavior, and learning in relation to current developmental and ecological theories of education in various settings. Students will consider the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for successfully creating formal learning environments (such as classrooms), facilitating learning in informal settings (in afterschool or in digital environments), and forging productive learning relationships with families and communities. The course focuses primarily on the facilitation of whole and small group interactions and introduces strategies for meeting individuals’ needs. This course is designed as a community learning experience. Class discussion will be a primary way in which you will construct knowledge in this course. The course will require your active, thoughtful and open-minded participation in our discussions and activities. Attendance and active participation are important components to your success in the course. Students learn more when they actively participate. Requirement/Restriction: Admission into the School of Education.
