Understanding Schools

Catalog description
This course examines schools in a changing global society. By examining the history, philosophy, legal and social responsibilities associated with schooling in the US and globally, candidates are introduced to the interactions among society, families, schools, curriculum, teachers, students and cultures. Through guided field experiences, students will observe and reflect on different aspects of schooling with particular focus placed on the role of teachers as agents of change and empowerment. During this course candidates will be challenged to examine the school as a diverse and inclusive community where all participants can learn in a safe and appropriate environment.
