Catalog description

In this course, we will explore The City as both a place and an idea. At its best, the city is the locus of tremendous creativity, energy, diversity, economic growth and possibility. It is also the host of persistent social problems—homelessness, racial segregation, gentrification, criminalization of marginalized groups, and the privatization of public spaces. As urban sociologists, we will utilize tools of the trade—analysis of databases, fieldwork, social theory, interviews, and other methods-- to explore these topics.
