Diplomacy

This course is a study of the people and institutions who facilitate and broker interactions between political players in the world. Diplomacy includes not only statecraft but also encounters and political agendas involving transnational nongovernmental organizations and networks, scientists, activists, and more. The topics explored in the course will vary depending on the expertise of the instructor and may include traditional approaches to statecraft, and/or critical approaches to diplomacy. Some possible examples of topics might include: the role of data and technology; small island state diplomacy; efforts to secure Indigenous rights; "heritage" diplomacy, including the acknowledgment of past harms and enduring legacies; “great power” diplomacy; as well as queer and feminist challenges to "great power" diplomacy."
