Politics in Literature

Catalog description

This course explores the political concepts and ideas embedded in select works of literature. Themes that will be explored include absurdity, depictions of democracy, domination, dystopia, existentialism, hopelessness, justice, judgement, law, and resistance. Authors such as Albert Camus, James Baldwin, Franz Kafka, Shirley Jackson, Herman Melville, and Fredrich Nietzsche will be covered. Assigned literary works will be accompanied by faculty led theoretical interventions into each text to complement, deepen, and enrich student’s experience with assigned readings.
